Evening Workshop: 30th June 2009
18.30 - 21.30 Workshop A: Skills development: Ensure continuous knowledge transfer to meet the increased demand of the nuclear industry
There is no other industry that should depend on the supply of a highly skilled and competent workforce more than a nuclear energy sector. From operations and process, to oversight and safety, slip-ups are not an option. The skill levels required are high and take time to learn. Nowadays when the nuclear development gains momentum across Europe, the lack of experienced professionals in nuclear technology in CEE is a growing concern to both regulators and the industry itself. It has never been more important to put a strategy in place that develops sufficient skills in the region to avoid the trap of having to compete for expertise from other countries.
This interactive workshop has been carefully prepared by the National Skills Academy for Nuclear & Cogent, World Nuclear University and the Swedish Nuclear Training and Safety Center who will provide you with a platform of new ideas to accelerate the skills of your workforce and retain key talent.
Key areas to be discussed will include:
- Developing a portfolio of solutions and products focusing primarily on addressing the acute gap in technical and vocational skills within the nuclear industry
- Developing transferability and common standards through the Skills Passport and the National Occupational Standards
- Effective strategies to increase your return on training investment
- Encouraging the continuous delivery of Foundation Degrees and supporting the development of a scheme to convert Foundation Degrees to Honours Degrees
- Working with schools via the Energy Foresight Programme and other partners to increase the number of young graduates starting a career in the nuclear industry
- Promoting public understanding of nuclear technology
- Inspiring and strengthening the development of a new generation of leaders for the nuclear industry
- Filling in the technical competence gap by retraining people from other industries
- Overcoming the challenge of an ageing workforce
- Identifying successful approaches to continuous knowledge and expertise transfer
- Effective cooperation of the nuclear industry with the Universities
